Making a Besom broom, finishing the new roof, planting veg and pallet breaking – all in a day’s work at Heartwood!

This week we were delighted to have two new members join our Heartwood community. Welcome to you both! It was another enjoyable day of varied different activities. We started the day working on a team activity to move logs from where they’d been felled to season for firewood under the newly re-roofed wood shed. We also collected birch twigs to make a giant besom broom for keeping the fire and shelter area clean. Some of us did some pallet breaking and then others de-nailed, saw and split the pallet wood for the fire. At lunch we all sat round the fire under the tarp and enjoyed a hot drink.

In the afternoon, we made the enormous broom, planted potatoes and tomatoes and used a handy tip from Helen’s neighbour to put a circle of oats around the vegetable plant we are growing to stop the slugs eating them. Fingers crossed it works.
